Hair transplant Ireland: TOP 3 techniques

Ireland is at the forefront of techniques when it comes to hair transplants. But 3 procedures are the most popular and most widely available.

The recommended techniques by your hair specialist in Ireland will most likely include:

FUT, FUE and combined methods

1. FUE hair transplant in Ireland

Picked by over 75% of patients, the FUE technique is the most popular procedure in Ireland for hair transplants.

FUE is one of the least invasive surgeries, leaving no signs of scarring. It also promises fast recovery post-surgery.

The surgery itself is incredibly straightforward; the surgeon harvests follicles individually with a micro punch. They will then open channels in the scalp, and implant grafts securely.

2. DHI hair restoration

The DHI hair transplant procedure is a slight variation to FUE and is growing in popularity as more clinics provide the treatment.

Your surgeon will use an implanter pen to insert follicles directly into the receiving area which is very useful for treating smaller areas of hair loss to achieve higher density recovery.

3. FUT or strip hair transplant

21% of patients opted for Follicular unit transplantation, also known as strip hair transplant or FUT.

The advantage of FUT is that you can transplant a large area in a single procedure. Your doctor will cut a narrow strip from a donor area, and extract follicles from it.

While FUE is a minimally invasive surgery, FUT often leaves signs of scarring. It also has a longer recovery time.

Advantages and disadvantages of a hair transplant in Ireland

Ireland has a great reputation in the hair transplant industry for providing advanced, modern procedures that yield great results.

But is it the right destination for your surgery? Let’s weigh up the pros and cons:

  • Wide selection of clinics across the country
  • Well regulated industry
  • Small country – minimal travel required
  • Follow up appointments are easy to attend

  • Hair restoration cost in Ireland can be rather high
  • Longer waiting lists
  • Prices may not be all-inclusive
  • Consultations and checkup appointments may be charged separately

Ireland promises a great hair transplant experience, but similar clinics might be able to offer just as much at lower prices.

We recommend you take some time to research and explore all of your options.

3 steps to get hair transplantation in Ireland

1. Consultation

Every hair transplant in Ireland starts with an in-depth consultation.

Your doctor will assess if you’re an ideal candidate by examining your scalp and overall health.

They will recommend suitable procedures, including both surgical and non-surgical, to help your desired results.

You’ll be able to ask any questions about your surgery. From the steps involved to risks and complications to the length of recovery, and when you can see the final results.

2. How is hair restoration surgery in Ireland performed?

You will arrive at the clinic around 8 am. You will meet with your surgical team, who will prep you by giving you medication and shaving your hair.

After a consultation with your surgeon, the procedure will then begin. Altogether surgery should take between 6 and 8 hours.

  1. The surgeon will disinfect your scalp and administer lidocaine injections, which numb the donor area.
  2. Your surgeon will begin to extract hair follicles. All the while, surgical assistants will clean and prepare follicles for grafting.
  3. After the extraction is complete, there will be a short break.
  4. Afterwards, implantation will begin. The surgical team will disinfect and numb the recipient area.
  5. Your surgeon will open channels in the donor area and implant the grafts safely and securely.

After surgery, your surgeon or nurse will guide you through your aftercare plan, including how to clean and care for your scalp.

You will be prescribed medication to help with both pain and infection. When your surgical team is satisfied you’re feeling OK, you can return home.

3. Aftercare

You can expect the final results of your hair transplant surgery after 12 months. Until then, you will have to follow your clinic’s instructions

These may include:

  • Taking a couple of days off from work post-surgery
  • Regularly using sterile saline spray to clean wounds
  • Take antibiotics
  • Avoid wearing hats, scarfs or using harsh shampoo
  • Avoid exercise, tanning, and swimming for 3-4 weeks

You can expect some degree of redness and swelling. There may also be scabbing on your scalp. These small wounds will heal in 10 to 14 days.

Implanted hairs will start to fall out after 1 month. This is perfectly normal. Hair will begin to regrow in 3 to 4 months, and you will see more density as time rolls on.

Irish clinics will require you to attend regular follow-up examinations. These are a great way to assess your recovery and ask any questions you may have with a member of your surgical team.

By following the post-operation guidelines you can ensure that you’ll be absolutely delighted with your new hair.
